Through the Stand Against Racism Series, the YWCA Greater Green Bay is working to help build and inclusive, welcoming community through collaboration, education and discussion. These one hour events begin at noon and are free and open to the public. You are encouraged to bring your own lunch. Tables will be provided. Reservations are encouraged, but not necessary. Dr. David Littig, UWGB Emeritus Professor and High School graduate from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Sylvia Garrido, native of Rio de Janeiro and ten-year resident of Green Bay, will present fascinating explorations of these issues in the context of the Brazilian culture and social development.
Professor Littig will provide a brief background to the patterns of immigration and how they shaped cultural, race relations and attitudes towards women.
Sylvia Garrido will discuss the culture of femicide and recent success of Maria da Penha, leading advocate for women rights, particularly against domestic violence.
