In overcrowded shelters in the south, shelters cannot make space fast enough for the influx of dogs that are constantly being brought in from the streets. At Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas, dogs are given three business days to be saved before their time is up. High-kill shelters have this system in place to make space for new dogs coming in daily. Lack of space, low funding, local culture, backyard breeding and weak laws and public policy all lead to the vicious cycle of millions of dogs reproducing and being euthanized every year. Rescue groups across the country carry the burden and work to rescue, rehabilitate, transport and place these dogs into homes with one goal in mind – rescue until every last dog has a family and a loving place to call home.
In Second Chances, Green Bay Photographer Audrey Thomas captures a vast array of dogs that local rescue group Lucky 7 Dog Rescue has placed into homes in 2019. As soon as dogs arrive into Lucky 7’s care, Audrey takes their portrait before they are sent home with their foster families. These dogs have come from a variety of situations and states across the country. Some are hurricane survivors, some have lived their whole lives chained to trees, some have come from the worst hoarding situations that rescue groups have ever seen. While their backgrounds differ, the dogs share in common their resiliency, courage, and capacity to love and forgive despite their circumstances. When taking their portraits, Audrey’s goal is to capture the spirit, potential and personality in each dog, in hopes that the images will help act as a bridge to matching them to their perfect forever families. The portraits represent all of the volunteers, time, effort and resources that have gone into getting these dogs healthy and adoptable. They represent their second chance.
