About the Artist

Artist: Laura B. Schley

Artist Statement:
July 4, 2026, marked the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. To commemorate this milestone, artist Laura B. Schley designed, pieced, and quilted the original We the People: A Community Quilt for 250 Years.

Created from mixed media on textile, this collaborative community quilt was brought to life through the contributions of more than 250 local participants. Each square reflects a unique story and perspective, reminding us that our past and present are shaped by many voices—and that the future we imagine is one we stitch together, side by side.

The image displayed here is a reproduction of the original quilt that is permanently displayed at City Hall.

The squares created by the community might reflect:
•A favorite moment in American history
•A historical figure who has made a positive impact
•An inventor or invention that changed everyday life
•A food, tradition, or pastime you love
•A place that feels important to you (local or national)
•A hope, dream, or value you want to carry forward

Or it may reflect ways to celebrate Green Bay's place in America:
•Its people and neighborhoods
•Local history and traditions
•Agriculture, industry, or craftsmanship
•The Great Lakes and surrounding landscapes
•Community pastimes, sports, and gathering places
