In a modern economy, a job is the primary way working people support themselves. And for many Americans, a job brings with it the dignity of making a contribution through work. For much of the twentieth century, American politicians, activists, and other leaders debated whether workers in the US should have a right to a job. Jon Shelton, Associate Professor of Democracy and Justice Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, examines this forgotten history and explores the arguments prominent Americans—from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Coretta Scott King—made for a guarantee of a job for everyone.

Jon Shelton is also the author of Teacher Strike! Public Education and the Making of a New American Political Order and the forthcoming book The Education Myth: How Human Capital Trumped Social Democracy.
