Obituary Writing: The Most Important Story You'll Ever Tell
with Sharon Verbeten

Saturday, April 1 (1 session)
Time: Saturday @ 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Ages: 16+
Cost: Supplies Included | $20

Obits aren’t just the often-boring death notices you used to read in the newspaper; today’s obituaries are snapshots of a person’s life, highlighting a person’s most memorable qualities and quirks. When someone dies, it’s not about sharing STUFF, it’s about sharing STORIES. So it’s important to make these legacy pieces count. Whether you’d like to write your own obituary—yes, it’s a thing and it’s beautiful!—or want to interview an aging relative to record their stories and last wishes, this workshop is for you! We’ll discuss how to gather and record information, edit it down and record it for when the time comes. Trust me, your family will thank you!

Instructor Biography

SHARON VERBETEN | EDITOR, WRITER, WORD WRANGLER

For more than 30 years, I've written about everything from custom caskets and wastewater plants to medical discoveries and special needs children. I've interviewed cancer survivors, children's book authors, funeral directors, antiques collectors and corporate CEOs. Throw anything at me, and I can research it and write about it in a compelling way. I’m a freelance writer and editorial director of my company All Write Creative Services and have presented on publishing and writing at Brown County Library and the Untitledtown Book Festival. I've also written two books for adults on Barbie and I've been regularly published in dozens of national trade and consumer magazines, including American Funeral Director, School Library Journal, Insight on Business, New England Antiques Journal and more. And marrying my loves of journalism and libraries, I’ve served as editor of Children and Libraries, the national publication of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), for the past 21 years. I’m the children’s services manager at the Manitowoc Public Library and I live in De Pere.
